As some blocks of activities and obligations shift around on our Spring calendar, we’re seeing the possibility of a three-ish-week Airstream trip in May, and since I love to trip-plan, here I am to type up some ideas. Alas, we don’t have enough time to go all the way to Wind Cave. I had so much fun researching propective itineraries that I came up with two, so I’ll write a separate post with our to-do-in-the-future northeastern three-weeker.
This trip will begin with a visit to my sister’s in Atlantic Beach, NC, so that means our initial trajectory will be southward. We had a blast on our Carolinas in November trip focusing on the NC and SC coast, so we’ll hit a few favorites from that trip and sprinkle in some new spots, spending about half of our time on the coast and half in the mountains.

Here’s what we’re looking at:
- Atlantic Beach, NC, where we’ll park in my sister’s driveway
- Southport, NC, to visit my dad, who spends part of the year there, and also check out Bald Head Island
- Myrtle Beach, SC: this could be a total disaster. I think college beach week and Bike Week happen after we leave…
- Hilton Head, SC, because we loved our last stay there. We’ll be there on a weekend; hopefully the traffic won’t make us lose our minds
- Savannah/Tybee Island, GA: We’ve stayed in/near Savannah a couple times (2017, 2022), so this time we might try staying on Tybee Island
- somewhere between Savannah and Highlands, NC: We really want to spend a night in Athens, GA, but the closest camping situation that allows dogs is 23 minutes from downtown, and we’ll already have spent a big chunk of the day in the car. Maybe Clemson, SC?
- Highlands, NC: When last in Highlands, we spotted a campground we’d like to try out
- NC mountains: Tsali/Nantahala/Sylva/Franklin/Waynesville/Maggie Valley/Bryson City… still have some research to do here! We’ve stayed in sweet Sylva and fun Franklin before, so could be based there and explore, or could try a new spot or two
- Brevard, NC, just south of Asheville, to do some hiking in Dupont State Forest
- Asheville, NC, because we love it, as you know if you’ve read this blog!

I personally feel more excited about the mountain destinations than coastal! The second itinerary I put together, which we can’t do this time because we need to go to NC, heads north into the mountains of Upstate New York. Anybody have experience with black fly season up there? I read it basically runs May through July!
Oh–speaking of trip planning, we added a new beast of a page to the site with all our multi-destination routes listed. Maybe it can help you plan a road trip. Let us know!
