Practice Camping Trip #1: Fredericksburg, VA

airstream and f-150

Campground(s)

We spent two nights at the Fredericksburg VA / Washington DC South KOA. It was quiet and woodsy, with a little lake, and pretty sparsely populated on a cold January weekend. The camp store had snacks and supplies, and the location was fairly close to Fredericksburg. Putting DC in the name is a stretch.

Then we spent one night at Pohick Bay Regional Park. It was FREEZING cold in the morning when we were trying to dump tanks and leave, and the lack of cable prevented us from watching our beloved Wahoos play basketball, but overall it was a nice stopover. It was too cold for us to venture out on any of the park trails, but we did spend some quality time at IKEA in nearby Woodbridge, stocking up on camper supplies.

Exploring Fredericksburg

We spent an afternoon in Fredericksburg while at the KOA. It was about a 15 minute drive from the campground to downtown, with easy parking, a pretty downtown stretch of shops and restaurants, and several eating and drinking options. I detailed the local food and beer we sampled in this post on our responsible consumerism blog, and a little run we did just outside downtown. We’re tracking the breweries we hit while Airstreaming, so until we get that part of the site up, below are some brief notes on the Fredericksburg breweries we tried.

Rusty Beaver Brewery is south of Fredericksburg, near the KOA. The suburban strip mall exterior hides a cozy little tasting room. The beer here was nothing to write home about.

Spencer Devon Brewing, in downtown Fredericksburg. This is a brewpub serving food with local ingredients, not just a tasting room. We tend to prefer the tasting room vibe, but our lunch here was nice, and the Redskins were on TV. We liked the IPA enough to get a growler of it.

Adventure Brewing Co is just outside Fredericksburg in a large warehouse-type space with TVs and board games and a food truck parked outside. We tried flights of wheat, pale ale, and IPA seasonal and standard varieties, and they were all nice, but I really wanted to try this wheat beer made with peanut butter, banana, and marshmallow fluff coming out a few days later!
