Valley of the Gods is along the stretch of boring old red cliffs and dull rolling gray-and-peach striped and folded hills (yes I mean the very opposite of boring and dull) (the folded hills were my favorite) between Bluff and Mexican Hat. It’s like a mini-Monument Valley, but because it’s mini is seems more intimate–or maybe it seems that way because there are no tours, barely any other cars at all. The scenic drive is gorgeous and fun (especially if you’re riding in the back of the pickup with your dog as your spouse drives the truck) and as we drove we noticed RVs camped here and there. Of course; this is BLM land and you can camp just about anywhere (they do ask you to stick to previously-camped in sites). So as we drove through agape at the rock formations, we picked out some campsites we’d enjoy boondocking in, and two days later, we exited our Bluff campground and creaked and banged (the weight distribution bars on the hitch make terrible noises) our way down the bumpy dirt road into the Valley of the Gods, made a sketchy sharp turn up a steep hill, and parked the Airstream on a little hill in the middle of the Valley, with privacy and views to die for. It’s surely the best camping in the Bluff area.
